Flood of Afghan refugees continues

    ISLAMABAD

    Amid reports of intense fighting between the Taliban and opposition Northern Alliance in north-east Afghanistan, thousands of people continued to stream into Pakistan, UNHCR said at the weekend. A UNHCR spokeswoman in Geneva said more than 2,600 Afghans had crossed into Pakistan at the Torkham border post last week, bringing the number of Afghans who had sought asylum in recent weeks to nearly 23,000.

    UNHCR recently transferred nearly 8,000 refugees from a transit centre in Jallozi, Pakistan, to a refugee village called New Shamshatoo. Conditions at the New Shamshatoo village were better, and the UN World Food Programme was providing wheat and cooking oil to the refugees, the announcement said.
