Zimbabwean women are attempting to boost their numbers in parliament with 55 from the ruling ZANU-PF and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) seeking seats, the largest number of female candidates in the country’s 20-year history, the Southern Africa Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC) said on Friday.
The last parliament, dissolved on 11 April, had 21 women members, all of them ZANU-PF with the exception of Margaret Dongo, the leader of the Zimbabwe Union of Democrats (ZUD). ZANU-PF is fielding the largest number of women candidates this election with 20 running. The MDC is fielding 11 women out of its 120 candidates.
