Zambia has been named as one of the countries in the southern African region where women’s rights violation and sexual abuse cases are rampant, the Zimbabwe based Southern Africa Regional Institute for Policy Studies (SARIPS) said on Tuesday.
The coordinator of the SARIPS gender programme, Dr. Patricia McFadden, was quoted in ‘The Post’ as saying that the incidence of violations had ranged from genital mutilation, the isolation of women as they undergo female circumcision and the increased cases of defilement and rape.
She said the problems in Zambia would continue as long as “culture continues to take a centre stage and the judicial system metes out simple punishments on erring child sexual abusers”. McFadden said Zambia is in the category of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana in terms of sexual violation.
