An inter-agency mission to the Ankoro area of Katanga province on Saturday reported that about 7,000 internally-displaced people (IDPs) had found refuge in the town, and some 70,000 others were scattered between Kabalo and Manono, an OCHA statement said. The UN-government-NGO team also visited Malemba Nkulu south of Ankoro on Sunday and estimated that there were some 44,000 IDPs around the town. The statement said humanitarian agencies were preparing to start nutrition, water and sanitation programmes to help the affected population in the area, and 300 mt of WFP food had been delivered to Malemba Nkulu from Lubumbashi on Sunday.
Meanwhile, OCHA and MEMISA had delivered non-food items and medical kits to Lubumbashi for distribution in Ankoro, while ACF and MSF were working with local health authorities to combat malnutrition and cholera outbreaks in the province. The statement said “individual and community survival mechanisms” were weakening. “The state of exhaustion of Congolese families as a result of the conflict and its impact is obvious throughout the country,” it added.
