Refugees flee Cazombo

    JOHANNESBURG

    Angolan refugees continue to flee into northwestern Zambia, escaping fighting around UNITA rebel-held Cazombo. UNHCR told IRIN on Monday that the influx is around 100 refugees per week into the Zambian border town of Mwinilunga.

    Cazombo, a small village elevated to strategic importance because if its landing strip, would be an important prize for the Angolan government. Clashes with UNITA have been reported in the Cazombo area.

    “We are on alert (for a large influx) but we are not sure if there are any large population centres left in the area,” a UNHCR official said. He added that the refugees who had arrived at Mwinilunga, who are being screened before being settled in the Angolan refugee camp at Maheba, were in “relatively good” shape.
