A US shipment of urgently needed food aid has arrived in the Angolan port of Namibe, the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) said in a statement.
The 6,500 mt consignment of commodities arrived on Friday and is part of a donation of 50,000 mt of food made by the US government to WFP’s Angola operation for the year 2000. WFP’s requirements for the year were initially estimated at a total of US $158 million. It faces a funding shortfall of 50 percent of that amount, and due to the deterioration in the humanitarian situation during the last three months, has increased its estimated food needs by at least another 30 percent.
“Its an unfortunate fact that requests for assistance are not likely to end quickly,” WFP Representative and Country Director Ronald Sibanda said in the statement. Close to 1.9 million Angolans are in desperate need of food aid, he said. Populations now at risk include large numbers of residents as well as war displaced.
