Thousands said displaced by rebel attacks

    NAIROBI

    Thousands of people are reported to have been displaced by rebel attacks in the southern Makamba province. The governor of Makamba, Colonel Gabriel Bunungu, told Burundi radio that the attacks began on 23 April when armed gangs raided a camp for displaced people at Mushara in Mabanda commune. He said 17 civilians and two rebels were killed in the fighting. Attacks also took place in Kibago commune. Several houses have been torched, and the security forces are still combing the affected areas, the governor said.
