The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said it was “deeply concerned” at the detention during the weekend of Rafael Marques, a journalist who represents the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa in Angola.
Earlier this month, the Angolan police accused Marques of defaming President Eduardo dos Santos.
The CPJ said that Marques had apparently been charged under Angola’s notorious, Law on Crimes Against State Security. The charge against Marques carries a maximum eight-year prison sentence. It added that Marques has been refused access to his lawyer and family, and that he had embarked on hunger strike to protest his detention.
