Bishop and four missionaries free

The Archbishop of Freetown, Joseph Ganda, and four missionaries are in a safe place in Freetown, the bishop of Makeni told the missionary news agency, MISNA, today. One of the priests, Father Giuseppe Cavallin, had not been kidnapped and had been in hiding for several days in Kissy, in eastern Freetown. ECOMOG has been conducting operations against RUF rebels in Kissy over recent days. The other missionaries and the bishop escaped from their kidnappers two days ago and were intercepted by ECOMOG troops this morning, the agency said. It added that it was “now certain” that the remaining missionaries, including six nuns, were still being held by the rebels.
