The UN Security Council has extended until 31 July 2009 the mandates of the UN mission in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) and the French troops supporting it. However, it has reduced the troop presence by one battalion.
The Security Council in a 27 January resolution urged the signatories to Côte d’Ivoire’s latest peace agreement “to protect vulnerable civilian populations”, including hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict since 2002.
The resolution notes that despite some improvement in the overall human rights situation, human rights violations against civilians continue, “including numerous acts of sexual violence”.
