The Kenyan drug firm, Cosmos, has been granted a license by German pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim to produce generic versions of its patented anti-AIDS drug, Nevirapine, for resale across east Africa and in Rwanda and Burundi.
Cosmos will produce Nevirapine in combination with other anti-AIDS drugs and also as a single-dose medication for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.
Nevirapine is still widely used in single-dose form for PMTCT, despite fears that the drug could create resistance in some HIV-positive expectant mothers.
The Associate Press quoted Cosmos managing director Prakesh Patel as saying: "We will start producing Nevirapine within two to three weeks."
