Condom distribution in schools considered

The department of education in South Africa's Western Cape province is considering making condoms more accessible to sexually active school pupils.

This follows concern expressed by education MEC Cameron Dugmore that the province's approach to HIV/AIDS prevention was not broad-based.

Dugmore was quoted by a local newspaper, Die Burger, as saying: "A lot has been done to treat the disease, but we have neglected prevention. As educators we need to ensure that prevention receives a lot more attention."

The MEC said although condom distribution in schools was a sensitive issue, the alarming number of sexually active pupils should be taken into account.
