Japanese support for HIV/AIDS orphans

    The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Zimbabwe has received US $1 million from Japan to support programmes for children affected by HIV/AIDS. Ambassador Tsunehige Iiyama said the contribution to UNICEF was part of Japan's mission to tackle the insecurity and pain caused by a pandemic that had left many children orphaned and vulnerable. Official figures show that more than one million Zimbabwean children have been orphaned by the disease, which is killing an estimated 3,000 people per week. "We hope this contribution to UNICEF will provide some of those most in need [with] the opportunity to learn how to cope better with their circumstances and, ultimately, provide them with better strategies to ensure their human dignity and security," the ZIANA news agency quoted Iiyama as saying.
