Rich nations can bring AIDS "under control"

    JOHANNESBURG

    Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, has called on the US and other wealthy nations to bring HIV/AIDS in Africa "under control" by partnering with developing nations and contributing more resources and effort.

    In a recent interview on NPR, an international producer of non-commercial news and entertainment programming, Sachs said hard-hit regions of Southern and Eastern Africa were being devastated by HIV/AIDS in a manner similar to Europe during the plague in the Middle Ages.

    However, the developed world's access to antiretroviral drugs, which often did not reach the poorest people, was "one big difference" between the scenarios, according to the Special Advisor.
