UN and former US president join forces on AIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    People living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries are set to benefit from an agreement signed between the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and former US president Bill Clinton.

    The partnership will combine the Clinton Foundation's anti-AIDS drug access programme with WFP's food-distribution system in extending services to people already receiving medicines through the Clinton Foundation's drug distribution programme.

    In a recent statement Clinton said, "One of the key challenges we face in tackling the HIV/AIDS crisis is that if a patient is malnourished, the [antiretroviral drugs] often do not take full effect."

    The Foundation's network of health centres will provide WFP with a better means of distributing food to those in need.
