University doctors tackle HIV/AIDS programme

US $20 million in new federal grants, awarded in collaboration with the Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) will be used to establish an HIV/AIDS treatment programme in Zambia. UAB obstetrician, Dr Jeffrey Stringer, said the goal of the treatment programme was to put at least 1,000 people on antiretroviral medication within two months, and 10,000 within five years. "This is a massive effort. We're under a tremendous amount of pressure under this initiative to get people on therapy," Stringer told US newspaper, The Birmingham News. The new funds are also expected to improve Zambia's ailing public health system - a critical step if reliable treatment is to be provided.
