HIV-positive people face an increased risk of contracting malaria, making it particularly important for them to take precautions against the disease, a medical expert has said.
Studies in Uganda have shown that HIV-positive people were more susceptible to attacks of malaria than people who were HIV-free.
Dr Stephen Toovey, the medical director of Netcare Travel Clinics in South Africa, explained that rapidly multiplying malaria parasites appeared to thrive even more in people with weakened immune systems.
Toovey was quoted by the South African Press Association as saying: "This makes it even more important for people with HIV/AIDS not to get malaria. The worse your HIV/AIDS, the worse your malaria and vice versa."
