International coalition to provide cheap AIDS drugs

    US pharmaceutical companies have teamed with South African and Indian generic drug makers to tackle HIV/AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean.

    The coalition aims to bring cheap combination anti-AIDS therapies to developing nations at around one-fifth of the lowest cost available in Western markets.

    News and information service, PR Newswire, reports that the deal marks the first time US pharmaceutical companies have worked towards an agreement with foreign generic producers.

    Although generic versions of drugs sometimes infringe on US and European patents, they have been lauded as an affordable weapon in the fight against HIV/AIDS in developing countries.
