Lack of political will in AIDS fight - Kaunda

    JOHANNESBURG

    African Union HIV/AIDS committee chairman Kenneth Kaunda has criticised "some African countries" for their lack of political will in tackling the pandemic.

    The former Zambian president did not include South Africa in the list of errant nations and endorsed the HIV/AIDS action taken by the country's president, Thabo Mbeki, according to a South African newspaper, Business Day.

    During a recent AIDS gathering in Johannesburg, Kaunda remarked that 80 percent of Africans lived in abject poverty, many were malnourished and diseases thrived.

    He said, "in such situations, drugs may not work properly," and stated that Mbeki was correct to draw attention to external factors, such as nutrition.
