Free AIDS drug programme launched

    JOHANNESBURG
    Two major referral hospitals in Zimbabwe are now offering free antiretroviral drugs to people living with HIV/AIDS. The Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, told a local newspaper, The Herald, that, with the necessary funding, the programme could expand to provincial and district hospitals in the near future. He said the health ministry hoped to get assistance from the Global AIDS Fund for the provision of more antiretroviral drugs, and to extend the programme. "In Zimbabwe there are 260,000 people in need of antiretrovirals and we hope that by 2005 half of these people will have access to treatment," Parirenyatwa added.
