Deadline announced for AIDS drug tender

Drug companies have until 2 April to submit detailed proposals to the government for the supply of antiretrovirals, the national health department has said.

Chief director of the health department, Nono Simela, said more than 40 pharmaceutical companies had expressed interest in the tender to supply the drugs.

She told the South African Press Association that the tender process was an important part of ensuring a sustainable supply of antiretrovirals at the best possible prices in the long term.

"Their proposals will be short-listed," Simela said. "Those who qualify will provide quotes and the tender will be awarded."
