COSATU welcomes anti-AIDS drug roll out

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has welcomed an announcement by the Gauteng Province's health department that treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS would begin at 5 hospitals from 1 April 2004.

    In a recent press statement, COSATU said: "We welcome that fact that this historic step forward will extend the lives of an estimated 10,000 people by March 2005 [and] give them the opportunity to enjoy a full and useful life, in which they will be able to work, look after their children and play an active part in society."

    The trade union urged the province to extend the rollout to the other 18 treatment sites, as announced by provincial health minister Gwen Ramokgopaas, as quickly as possible.
