The Zambian First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa, has said it is important to give priority to women in HIV/AIDS treatment programmes.
She told a local newspaper, The Times of Zambia, that treatment focused on women and girls would impact positively on the population, because women were the main care givers in every family and community.
Quality HIV/AIDS treatment programmes, especially for women, would enable most families to remain intact and prevent the increasing number of orphans by giving children the opportunity to have healthy parents, the first lady said.
Mwanawasa also noted that the response by African countries and the world community to the challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic was inadequate, and called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders.
