Food shortages compounded by HIV/AIDS

    HIV/AIDS, drought and conflict are creating serious food shortages in half of Africa's countries, a UN agency has said.

    The report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said "food shortages are being compounded by the effect of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on food production, marketing and transport."

    It is estimated that 24 of the 38 countries around the world seriously affected were in Africa.

    The FAO said shortages loomed in all other regions of the continent, except in the countries on the rim of the Sahara desert, known as the Sahel.
