Joint venture announced for cheap AIDS drugs

    JOHANNESBURG

    Zambia could soon start producing generic versions of patented anti-AIDS drugs in a joint venture with a Cuban manufacturer, the Ministry of Health has said.

    According to the South African Press Association (SAPA), Health Minister Brian Chituwo said Zambia and the Cuban firm, Farko, would start production before June 2004.

    Chituwo said as part of its commitment to step up action against HIV/AIDS, the government would increase its budget allocation this year for existing anti-AIDS programmes and treatment.

    The government is currently rolling out subsidised antiretroviral drugs to 10,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, at a cost of US $5 dollars per person per month.
