AIDS and TB co-infections receive attention

    JOHANNESBURG

    The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNAIDS have jointly announced plans to boost existing programmes aimed at curbing the growing global pandemic of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) co-infections.

    UNAIDS executive director, Dr Peter Piot, said in a statement that the main focus of the programme would be on Africa, where 70 percent of the world's 14 million people who are co-infected live.

    Piot said he hoped that by tackling TB and HIV/AIDS together, the boost in programmes would have a significant impact on improving the quality of life of HIV-positive people, while also controlling TB and preventing new infections.

    Research suggests that TB is perhaps the greatest and most deadly opportunistic infection associated with HIV/AIDS.
