Court victory for HIV-positive scholars

A Kenyan High Court judge on Friday ruled that more than 70 HIV-positive orphans be integrated into public schools by the end of the school year. The Nyumbani Children's Home, which houses the orphans, had for the past three years been trying to place its 72 HIV-positive children in public primary schools, without success. Earlier this week, Ababu Namwamba, the lawyer representing the orphans, argued that because the schools had refused to admit the children, the Ministry of Education had violated Kenyan law as well as international human rights conventions. In an interview with the Associated Press, Namwamba said: "The successful conclusion of this matter is a resounding victory for life, liberty and justice over prejudice, stigma and fear."
