US delegation assesses HIV/AIDS impact

    JOHANNESBURG

    An American delegation was recently in Uganda to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS on the country and its needs for tackling the pandemic.

    The delegation, led by the US secretary for health and human services, Tommy Thompson, was made up of American public health officials, lawmakers, business representatives, academic and religious leaders.

    A statement issued by the US embassy in Uganda said, "Thompson will examine the US government-supported HIV/AIDS efforts, as well as private-sector efforts to address the HIV/AIDS crisis, and will also discuss US President George W. Bush's emergency plan for AIDS relief and plans for the Global Fund."

    The group is also expected to visit Zambia, Rwanda, and Kenya during the trip.
