South African families struggling with HIV/AIDS and poverty are set to benefit from a new government food scheme totalling just over US $62 million.
The second phase of the emergency food plan originally approved by cabinet in 2002 aims to target more than 350,000 households, including ones headed by children.
Details of the scheme were released on Friday by Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya, with the promise that it would kick off on 1 December, World AIDS Day.
Skweyiya was quoted by the South African Press Association (SAPA) as saying: "[This] symbolises the government's commitment to an integrated campaign and strategy to fight HIV/AIDS, that includes poverty alleviation."
