A Zimbabwean project for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is set to benefit from a recent Canadian grant totalling US $24 million over three years.
The funds are expected to help provide support for comprehensive HIV prevention and care services for women and children in rural areas and will be directed through the Zimbabwe Vitamin A for Mothers and Babies (ZVITAMBO) project.
According to local newspaper, The Herald, ZVITAMBO has since 2001 been working closely with the country's ministry of health, providing technical support and conducting operational and clinical research on HIV/AIDS.
Vuyelwa Chitimbirike, director of the Zimbabwe Association of Church-related Hospitals, said the funding was a welcome HIV/AIDS relief at a time when the country was faced with poverty and economic hardships.
