Anti-AIDS drugs made freely available

    JOHANNESBURG

    The international medical NGO, Medicines Sans Frontieres (MSF) has made antiretroviral drugs freely available to all people living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda's northwestern Arua district.

    MSF mission director, Isabelle Voiret, said that while the original aim was to distribute free anti-AIDS drugs only to HIV-positive expectant mothers, the organisation now supplied the drugs to all who could not afford them.

    During a recent interview with a local newspaper, The Monitor, Voiret said: "We are providing antiretroviral drugs free of charge, and to everybody who needs them."

    MSF is spending around US $24,000 per month on anti-AIDS drug therapy for an estimated 520 HIV-positive people who are now receiving treatment in Arua hospital.
