In an effort to reduce the rate of HIV infection among women, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) could soon extend an existing campaign to promote the nationwide use of female condoms.
ZNFPC acting manager for marketing and communications, Farai Zihute, said the campaign had already been launched in Masvingo province and would soon be active in other provinces.
Zihute was quoted by the state-owned ZIANA news agency as saying: "We are working with the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to promote the use of the female condom by our women."
According to ZNFPC, the condoms were distributed free of charge and proved to be quite popular among women in the targeted areas.
"Our programmes are mainly for the poorest of the poor, and we don't want the barrier of cost to prevent people from getting them," Zihute explained.
