Countries plan joint AIDS drug purchase

    JOHANNESBURG

    Zambia is exploring the possibility of purchasing HIV/AIDS drugs jointly with Zimbabwe and Malawi, the country's ministry of health said on Thursday.

    Zambian Health Minister Brian Chituwo said the combined purchase of antiretroviral drugs could offer the benefit of reduced prices to all three countries.

    The Panafrican News Agency (PANA) quoted Chituwo as saying: "If they [antiretroviral drugs] are bought on a larger scale ... it will be cost-effective."

    Zambia was recently allocated a US $119 million Global AIDS Fund grant to tackle HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria over five years.
