HIV/AIDS project targets NGOs

    JOHANNESBURG

    A campaign to help NGOs mainstream HIV/AIDS into their existing activities kicked off in Angola this week.

    Funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO), the US $395,000 project aims to ensure that communities receive adequate knowledge of the pandemic.

    Charged with implementing the project, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said in a statement that training would instruct NGOs on HIV/AIDS prevention, transmission and infection strategies in Angola.

    UNICEF estimated that only eight percent of Angolan women had adequate knowledge of HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, and nearly one-third of all Angolan women have never heard of HIV/AIDS.

    "This is why informed, innovative and industrious NGOs are vital in Angola," UNICEF Angola representative, Mario Ferrari, said.
