Proposals for AIDS money examined

The eligibility of 235 Kenyan AIDS NGOs for access to a US $26 million Global AIDS Fund grant is currently being examined, the Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium (KANCO) has said. Proposals are being scrutinised by a six-person committee, with recommendations due for submission to the Ministry of Health by 16 July. "What we are trying to do is devise criteria, look at which are good proposals, which are addressing the issues, which have the capacity to implement the projects, and which are credible organisations," KANCO executive director, Alan Ragi, told the UN news service PlusNews. During the recent signing of the US $52 million donor financial agreement, the Kenyan Finance Minister, David Mwiraria, promised that "no effort would be spared to root out corrupt individuals". Priority areas to be addressed by the grant are the up-scaling and improvement of voluntary counselling and testing, AIDS-related treatment, and education.
