AFRICA: EU fails Global AIDS Fund

The European Union (EU), has failed to agree on pledging up to US $1 billion towards the Global AIDS Fund, the BBC reported on Monday. The Fund, which was established in 2001, aims to eradicate HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by providing quality affordable prevention and treatment to poor people in developing countries. Commitment failure late last week by the EU leaders meeting in Greece, is likely to affect possible funding from the United States. US President George W Bush recently promised to donate $1 billion a year to the Fund, provided the EU could do the same. Despite pledges by the US of $4.6 billion through 2008, the Fund faces a US $3 billion shortfall to cover its funding requirements up to the end of 2004.
