Number of abandoned babies rises in Kenya

A home for HIV-positive babies in Kenya on Thursday expressed concern over the rising number of abandoned babies since the beginning of 2003. Most of the babies are abandoned because they are believed to be born with HIV and their mothers are too young or poor to cope. However, the New Life Home Trust said the reasons for abandonment were many and differed from region to region. "We don't know why it's getting worse. We can only guess," New Life Home Trust co-director, Clive Beckenham, told the UN news service PlusNews. Beckenham said the home was recently contacted by two hospitals needing homes for 11 unwanted babies.
