EU urged on Global Fund backing

    JOHANNESBURG

    American Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson on Tuesday urged the European Union (EU) to help with the predicted Global AIDS Fund shortfall.

    The US General Accounting Office (GAO) earlier this month estimated the Fund needed an additional US $1.4 billion to finance 160 projects in 92 developing countries.

    Addressing the European Parliament's Committee on Development and Cooperation in Brussels, Thompson said the Fund's promise was great, "but would not be realised without sufficient resources to execute its mission".

    "That's something we cannot allow to happen again. The utility and credibility of the Fund depends on it," Thompson added.
