NGOs demand separate AIDS fund audit

A number of NGOs in Zimbabwe have called for an independent audit of the national AIDS fund, local newspaper The Daily News reported on Friday. At a recent meeting to discuss the country's national AIDS policy, NGO representatives expressed concern that funds were not reaching intended beneficiaries because no audits were done. "We need to know how the money is being used. An independent audit will help allay rumours of money being misappropriated," the regional co-ordinator of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, Misheck Gapare, said. Gapare called for the accountability of the National AIDS Council (NAC), adding that "taxpayers were anxious to know how their money was being used".
