UNICEF delivers drugs for AIDS orphans

HIV/AIDS orphans in the Central African Republic (CAR) are set to benefit from US $100,000 worth of drugs, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Thursday. UNICEF said the drugs would be distributed through selected health facilities to some 200 HIV/AIDS orphans until the end of 2003. "The beneficiaries are estimated to be aged below 15 years," UNICEF CAR HIV/AIDS project officer, Speciose Hakizimana, told the UN news service PlusNews. Figures from the Institut Pasteur have suggested that the CAR has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the central African region. Hakizimana said UNICEF and the CAR government were due to adopt a programme introducing HIV/AIDS education programmes in primary schools.
