HIV prevention funding running dry

    JOHANNESBURG

    Global HIV/AIDS prevention programmes are in danger of running out of money by 2005, leading health experts warned on Wednesday.

    In its new report, "Access to HIV Prevention: Closing the Gap", the Global HIV Prevention Working Group said global HIV prevention funding could fall short by US $3.8 billion.

    Examining funding gaps for each region in the world, the report recommends increased spending from all resources on HIV prevention to make up the shortfall.

    The report said fewer than one in five people at risk of HIV infection today had access to prevention programmes.

    The Working Group consists of members of UNAIDS, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).
