Global AIDS Fund running short

The Global AIDS Fund is in danger of running out of money, the US General Accounting Office (GAO) said on Wednesday.

"Pledges made for this year [2003] are insufficient to cover more than a small number of grants to developing countries," the GAO said in a statement.

The Fund has committed financing for 160 projects in 92 developing countries and estimates it will need at least US $1.4 billion more this year.

US president George W Bush recently pledged US $1.65 billion of a US $3.4 billion overall sum to the fund, provided other donors collectively match the sum two-to-one.

"We can't afford to squabble when there are 6 million people a year dying of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria," the fund's executive director, Richard Feachem, said.
