Action urged on global AIDS plan

    JOHANNESBURG

    US President George W. Bush on Tuesday urged congress to speedily pass his recently proposed US $15 billion global plan to combat HIV/AIDS.

    In his annual state of the union address early this year, Bush called on congress to triple government spending on HIV/AIDS in Africa and Haiti over five years.

    "Time is not on our side, so I ask congress to move forward with the speed this crisis requires," Bush said in a White House statement.

    The bill is set for a vote in the House of Representatives on Thursday and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to take up the legislation next week.
