Russian Federation pledges aid for refugees

    ABIDJAN

    The Russian Federation has pledged to donate US $2 million to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for its Africa programmes, UNHCR reported.

    In a briefing on Friday at its Geneva-based headquarters, UNHCR said the Russian Federation's pledge would help support its US$390-million Africa programme, which accounts for 32 percent of the refugee agency's global requirements for 2003. The promised aid would be the first ever cash contribution to UNHCR from the Russian Federation, which had previously provided in-kind contributions on several occasions. In welcoming the contribution, UNHCR also said it was glad to see that new donors were making contributions.

    According to UNHCR spokesperson Ron Edmond, more than four million people are of concern to the agency which has so far covered 32 percent of its Africa needs. UNHCR urged other donors to contribute so that it could continue to assist needy populations in the various conflict situations across the continent.
