Continent to benefit the most from US donation

    ABIDJAN

    The United States government pledged US $69 million on Tuesday to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as part of a $125-million commitment made last month to the organisation's programmes in 2003, the US government announced.

    Africa, which hosts the largest number of refugees and displaced persons, is to be the largest beneficiary with US $30 million. The donation also includes US $12 million for operations and headquarters activities and $4 million for refugee resettlement, a State Department statement said on Tuesday.

    In the statement, the United States - UNHCR's main donor country - urged "other donors to do their share and share UNHCR's crucial work."
