MONUC initiates investigation into shooting

The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, known as MONUC, has opened an investigation into the shooting of a student during riots in Kisangani on Tuesday, following allegations that its soldiers may have been involved in the incident.

MONUC soldiers, who were travelling in a truck close to the university, had fired into the air to disperse the students and to free both the vehicle as well as MONUC staff, the UN mission stated. Soldiers of the Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie rebel group, which governs the city, were already present at the scene and were also firing into the air.

The student was shot in the right hand and was subsequently transported to hospital, MONUC reported. He had reported being in a building, away from the scene, when the incident occurred.

The UN mission appealed for calm in the city, stating that any attempt at provocations, manipulations of facts of disinformation would only harm the ongoing peace process.
