A joint investigation team consisting of representatives from the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), the Uganda People's Defence Force, and the Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie-Kisangani-Mouvement de liberation (RCD-K-ML) has been established following fighting last week in the town of Bunia, eastern Congo, MONUC spokesman Hamadoun Toure told IRIN on Wednesday.
He said the (RCD-K-ML) reported that Ugandan troops killed between 35 and 40 of its fighters, while the Ugandans reported one enemy fighter dead and 12 taken prisoner. Toure said MONUC had no independent figures or report of its own on the matter, and that no definite closing date for the investigation had been determined.
During a recent visit to the area, the Congolese minister of human rights, Ntumba Luaba, said three years of fighting between the Hema and Lendu ethnic groups had led to 20,000 deaths.
