Five peacekeepers die in road accident

Country Map - Sierra Leone (Freetown) IRIN
Five Bangladeshi peacekeepers died following a road accident last week outside the capital, Freetown, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) said on Monday. UNAMSIL Public Information Officer Patrick Coker told IRIN that the UNAMSIL vehicle in which the soldiers were travelling "left the road and rolled over". No other vehicle was involved in the incident which took place on Thursday afternoon at Waterloo, some 25 km southeast of Freetown. The cause of the accident was still being investigated, Coker said. Bangladesh contributes some 4,200 soldiers to UNAMSIL, which currently stands at over 17,000 making it the largest UN peacekeeping operation in the world. Meanwhile, at the weekend, the Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Sierra Leone Behrooz Sadry and UNAMSIL Force Commander Lt. Gen Daniel Opande attended the inauguration of a school and mosque built by Bangladeshi peacekeepers in the western district town of Port Loko, UNAMSIL reported.
