Elections "an important milestone," UN says

The UN Security Council said on Wednesday that upcoming elections in Sierra Leone were an important milestone in the peace process and signalled its intention to adopt a resolution clarifying UNAMSIL's role in the process as soon as possible. The Security Council's President, Ambassador Jagdish Koonjul, said in a statement that while elections were primarily the responsibility of the Sierra Leonean government and its electoral commission, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) had an important supporting role to play. Members welcomed the UN Secretary-General's recommendations that UNAMSIL should "provide support with security, logistics, monitoring, public information and the coordination of election observers," the statement said. Presidential and legislative elections are scheduled to take place in May 2002 in Sierra Leone.
