The UN Security Council on Thursday expressed support for the upcoming summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and efforts by SADC leaders to end the fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UN News reported.
"Members of the Security Council expressed full support to the heads of state and government of the SADC for their strenuous efforts in finding a solution to the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo," the current Council President, Jagdish Koonjul of Mauritius, said in a press statement.
The SADC Extraordinary Summit Meeting on conflict situations in the region is to be held on 14 January in Blantyre, Malawi.
Malawi Foreign Minister Lillian Patel told journalists in Blantyre on 3 January that the SADC leaders would be joined at the summit by the presidents of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, and Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and the facilitator of the inter-Congolese dialogue, former Botswana head of state Ketumile Masire.
"The top item on the agenda will be the conflict in the DRC," PANA quoted her as saying.
Also scheduled for discussion are the land crisis in Zimbabwe and the civil war in Angola.
